Steam Heating

One of the easiest components to use for homeowner maintenance is the sight glass located on the side of the boiler cabinet. The boiler water level can be seen in this vertical glass tube and it should be between 1/2 to 2/3 full - have serviced if above or below these levels. The low water cutoff valve should be checked yearly for proper operation and the blow-off valve needs to be purged on a weekly basis during the heating season. Another important feature of this system is the "Hartford Loop" which prevents the boiler from losing it's water - install if missing. The radiator air valves require seasonal inspection - clean, adjust, or replace as necessary.
