(what's a homeowner to do?) |
House paint has come a long way in recent years, especially in the latex arena. Plus, with new regulations specifying reduced VOC's (volatile organic compounds), oil based paints will become scarcer. Latex paints enjoy easy cleanup, minimal odor, less mildew buildup, better breathability, and increased flexibility, to mention a few. Oil paints do have a place (or two) though. Used as primer and on house trim (interior & exterior), they tend to adhere better to other types of paints (ie. on existing coats of chalky & glossy oil), they seal wood and hide brush strokes better, and they block those pesky stains that show through after you finished that great painting job. It used to be that oil was the choice for low outdoor temperature painting - now latex can be applied down to around 40 degrees. Do your homework before you work your home - and good luck with your next painting project!
