If you have an older "gravity type" heating unit, and the components permit, system efficiency can be greatly increased by installing one or more circulating pumps with zoned thermostats. Have a heating contractor complete a pressure test prior to installing the pump(s). For an existing one pump, one thermostat system, increase efficiency by installing more pumps and thermostats. All system valves, expansion tanks, safety devices, and other components should be checked yearly and replaced if defective. Finally, two of the most cost effective means of increasing the efficiency of any heating system are adding insulation and improving weatherization.
